Robert Shechter

Biography

With 40 years experience working as a photographer, combined with 25 years as a lecturer in the Ontario Community College system, Robert Shechter produces a range of corporate literature and postcards as well as travel photography through his company.

Robert has been travelling with his cameras from Greenland to Spain, from Iceland to Russia, and many places in between, sharing his impressions and experiences through slide shows and lectures.

One of his favourite photographic destinations is the High Arctic. During the last year, Robert has been focussing on Norway, Nunavut and Northern Greenland, producing a portfolio of Arctic images.

Robert is a resident lecturer for the ROMLife Programmes, and also teaches a variety of Photography classes at the Royal Ontario Museum, and other venues.

Robert has produced shows - no mere travelogues, but rich in local history, architecture and culture - on behalf of Tourist Boards, Camera Clubs, and Social Clubs. His work has appeared in Toronto Life Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, and other publications.

Artist's Statement

I have always been fascinated by the High Arctic, by its primeval beauty and its extraordinary range of colours, shapes and structures.

Over the years, I have visited and photographed the Arctic regions of Canada, Greenland and Norway, marvelling at the similarities but also the huge differences between their nature, their animal and human habitat.

This collection of photographs is the result of my last journey to the Canadian and Greenlandic High Arctic during the summer of 2006.
