I have always loved books and the quest for knowledge
which they represent, and thus I began using books as canvases.
This is a surprising medium as it is not always obvious that these
paintings are in fact old books until one notices the spine in the
middle. I began by creating houses from these books and then
moved to more abstract designs. The playfulness of combining
literature and painting appeals to both my artistic sensibility and my
love of reading. From this idea, the library series sprang into
my mind, bringing new life to old printing type trays. In this
series, each compartment is its own painting and together they form a
vast library. The entrances and staircases in these pieces
reflect the depth of knowledge that libraries contain and the
undiscovered frontiers of books. The fan compartment reflects the
spectrum of knowledge and the opening of one’s mind to new depths and
frontiers of knowledge. The folded fragments in each compartment
are made from old works on paper, a reinvention of old paintings.
These two series have allowed me to explore my interest in collage
while appreciating the beauty of books and libraries. |
